Cathedral puts faith in pick-and-carry crane
A G90 self-propelled electric crane from Italian manufacturer Galizia will be used at the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo di Milano for numerous lifting tasks, said Fabio Galizia-Vercelli, Managing Director of Galizia.
The Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo di Milano is the facility from where the cathedral was built in 1386, and is now used to preserve and maintain the cathedral. The compact G90 crane features a 180-degree steering angle to suit the narrow spaces of the cathedral, which Galizia-Vercelli said are difficult to access. It also features anti-trace wheels to prevent damage to the doors.
Lifting operations include daily loading and unloading of trucks; and laying marble slabs, building materials and works of art. On some special religious holidays, the crane will be used to install important works of art inside the cathedral. For the latter, the crane has been equipped with a special fully hydraulic telescopic jib controlled by an electric joystick, allowing cable pulling and lifting of 600kg to a height of 15.5m.
“Thanks to this special jib the valuable paintings portraying the life of San Carlo Borromeo will be lifted and mounted along the aisles,” said Fabio Galizia-Vercelli. “I am very proud that the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo di Milano has chosen our company and our crane for solving a very delicate and specific lifting problem.”
